At noon Monday June 22, the Doug Martin Quartet took the stage at the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival & performed an excellent set. Bassist Tom Denison, drummer Jeff Asselin & pianist Yves Laroche were all in fine form. From the smiling faces & many favourable comments which followed, it is safe to say the audience was well pleased. It had been 2 or 3 years since we have played this festival & it was a great pleasure to do so again. The music was all original, some of it drawn from the Odyssey CD, some from a series of new tunes inspired by my recent sojourn to Cuba in December 2014 where I had the pleasure of performing at the Havana Jazz Festival, as well as a couple of older unrecorded tunes favoured by fans & band alike. The quartet will go into the studio again this fall to record a new CD devoted entirely to my Cuba-inspired music. Look for it in early 2016.
